The Trombone
The first evidence of the trombone was with the early Greeks in 685 B.C. In medieval times the English term "sackbut" was bestowed on the instrument. This term was most likely derived from a similar sounding French term sacqueboute meaning to push and pull. However, today it is called the "trombone" which is Italian for "large trumpet". The trombone is usually characterised by a telescopic slide with which the player varies the length of the tube to change pitches.
